Nanban Review

The story of how 3 fellows became thick mates, the story of a man who opposed the education system, a sweet love story, the search for a lost friend and with many more, the official remake of 3 Idiots in Tamil, Nanban (Friend) is an immensely gratifying experience.

The story basically revolves around a college, and everything that grows into life from it; Events stringed over a non-linear screenplay is what it’s all about. Just like Hirani’s earlier ones, there’s life in most events, events that you would relate to, events that paint a smile on your face, present in plenty. Well-sketched characters, and a neat flowing screenplay make this journey immensely delightful in more than a single way.

The highpoint of this flick, definitely is Vijay. Surprisingly, turns out with one of his career-best performances, after a long hiatus of cliche-filled roles. Aamir’s performance has clearly been taken as gospel, but still Vijay adds to it, a zing of his own. Jiiva again is a delight to watch, while Srikanth bounds leaps into commendable territory, from all the silver-screen debacles of his past. Sathyan is a livewire, whereas Sathyaraj is perfect in place. Ileana, sadly is the huge disappointment for an otherwise performance package; Varied scales of performance, with generous usage of her hip ( there’s even a song praising it! ).

Technically the film is top-notch. Manoj Paramahamsa’s cinematography makes you totally fall in love with the lush locales of Ooty as well as Andaman, as well as offer an undeterred visual experience in the emotional sequences. The CG work, though in bits, is done neat. Harris’s songs are peppy and hummable, though, the score falls short of being truly lifting, dramatic considering the movie’s emotional curve. Songs could have been shot better, though the director’s outrageous take on his very own ways has to be given a pat on the back. Antony’s edit falls short of expectations, for the few bad transits and a painfully long second half.

Finally Shankar; Probably the best thing he did, once deciding to remake 3Idiots, was to add nothing. To just replicate it, almost. Wise move, because most directors try remaking films in their own way and tamper with the original’s impact. Sadly, it’s not being appreciated much, audience somehow want Shankar to add as many new scenes he could possibly do. I’d rather commend him for the guts, a director of his stature could have, to photocopy a film ( officially! ), and to declare openly that every single appreciation Nanban would fetch, would truly belong to Hirani and not himself. Kudos! That tight slap struck every single one out there, shamelessly remaking under the alias of inspiration.
Nanban, is the perfect cocktail you need this Pongal. Laugh, learn, love and cry through this bittersweet experience that only leaves you wanting for more in the end.

Rating : 4/5

P.S: I am not a fan boy of vijay's mass masala flicks, this is completely different for him. He is back with a bang, and yeah the vijay that we liked in the old ages like ”Thulladha manamum thullum”,“kadhalukku mariyadhai”..... times are back. And he has performed exceedingly well when compared to his recent flicks.

7aum Arivu - Could've been better

According to the advertisement promos and as the media sites stated “ Aggressive marketing strategy of the produces udhayanidhi stalin ” , everything created a huge hype around 7aum Arivu. The film goers expected alot when the director stated that “ neenga evlo evlo evlo edhir pathalum adhukku mele mela mela padam irukkum....” . I personally think this is where the 7aum arivu team lost themselves. This hype created by 7aum arivu made velayudham and RA.one( with a cameo from thalaivar) looked a bit under rated film. Before the release it looked like 7aum arivu is the sure winner of DD. But what happened was absolute stunning.
This film itself was made at a huge hype around because of the rejoining of the super hit team “ Ghajni” back again. I every press meet the crew said  “ Harris jeyaraj’s first word as soon as we started planning for this project was that, if we are going to join together again then it should be bigger than Ghajni in all means” . If that was true then Harris have selective amnesia.. The songs of this films are a Deja vu, you would have heard these same tunes already , Harris you really need to stop hushing your songs again and again. Lets go to the film part.
The film starts off with a 20 mins documentary( could’ve been short for 5 mins or less). This little period should have set the tone for the movie, but ARM missed this opportunity. After that, the so called love scenes was just horrible, he tried to recreate the magic of ghajni. But lost his track this time around. I really missed the ARM of dheena, ramana and ghajni , its not up to his standards. Then come the most funniest part, THE CHINESE PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH , also the censor board has done some good work by muting the word government, when they say Chinese.  From here the the script falls into mediocrity with inept and amateurish narration.

It's a catch-22 for Murugadoss, who wants to explore hitherto untouched areas of our history and also not give up the safe route of duets in exotic locales and jigs on crowded streets! Apparently confused, he has a screenplay that throws up quite a few loopholes. Listing them is redundant but when you have a Chinese casually roaming around town wreaking havoc at will, a Law and Order wing in deep slumber, a handful of young researchers taking on an entire enemy nation and making huge decisions that the Government seems unaware of … you begin to wonder whether such greenness is really from Murugadoss!

According to me Suriya has done his job well, i couldn’t find too much of over reacting in this movie, like singam or ratha charithiram. The villain Dong lee, the stunt double for SPIDER MAN was such a power full guy. He din even open his abs, but in some scenes the hero goes and hide out. This guy added a lot of spice to the movie. Then comes the shruthi hassan’s part, she should really go and get some training from his father and also need to learn the Tamil pronunciation. Why cant someone dub for her. Did they ever think they could get national award for this  role?? Seriously???? You got to be kidding.

In a scene where shruthi tries to support Tamil , it was a scene wanted'ly created to get the audience on their side. The director has failed over here, he has lost his confidence over his script and used tamil as his saviour.  If u really wanna use such hard language against others for ill traeting tamil, then you should first stop killing Tamil. Shruti was literally speaking Tanglish all through the film and in that particular scene she was speaking more English words than any other people in that meeting room. We could realize what is goin to happen until the climax even within the first 40 mins of the film, and everything happened as expected. Which is the main reason for disappointment of film goers. At last the scenes in forest are just the normal tamil commercial movie, hero bashing up the villain, nothing new. I don't know where suriya’s all kungfu and martial arts skill went in this film. I hardly manage to remember a 2 or three fight scenes with martial arts. Too much hypnotism by dong lee made the people restless. Also most irritating part is Dong lee with too much of hypnotism and Suriya getting 8 packs through DNA manipulation.

Final word:
With such a  huge story, you cant mess up with love scenes, duet , love failure songs.. etc. The film would have been better if they have put the effort over the screenplay, instead of putting all the effort towards technical slickness. Also despite 80 crores budget the CG work seems to be horrible. Suriya opened his shirt again and agian, but the real bodhidharmar was with a belly. Harris jeyaraj has let down this film with both the songs and RR, Ghajni was a treat by him, which this film lacks a lot. Also Dong lee was shown a little less power full character, He could’ve had more power full scenes. Talent wasted in the form of abhinaya and Johnny.
